The Best Kept Secret

The following is a guest post from CCCU Director of Operations, Tyson Zeltinger.

From time to time when I am visiting with people about what we do here are Citizens, I hear the response that we are the best kept secret in the community. Most people know us as the financial institution with the new building on 32nd Ave in Grand Forks, but don't really know anything else about us. Are we the best kept secret?

We have been around for 76 years. We offer both consumer and business services. Citizens offers the same products and services as the bank down the street. Members accounts are federally insured up to $250,000 by the NCUA, the same protection the FDIC provides bank accounts. The only difference is that credit unions are non-profit, member-owned financial cooperatives. That means, while banks are accountable to their stockholders, credit unions answer to their members. Rather than paying out profits in dividends, credit unions put the money they earn toward serving their members with things like better interest rates on loans and accounts. This can be seen with our Kasasa checking account that pays 3% interest or our CD rates that are paying up to 372% more than other institutions in the market.

Citizens is very community focused: giving back to charities and developing partnerships with local businesses, which often make members, who work at those businesses, eligible for discounts on credit union services; all who live within our field of membership are welcome to become members.

Next time you drive by one of our offices, stop in and check us out. We have a very knowledgeable staff, a wide variety of products and services, and offer great rates. This is one secret we want to get out.
